Job Description
Duties Summary
This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Subtropical Horticulture Research Station with one vacancy in Miami, Florida.

The incumbent serves as curator and recognized scientific expert in subtropical/ tropical woody and herbaceous ornamental germplasm to include palms, cycads, and others which may benefit the Florida and other Southern states ornamental industry.
Implements new procedures used to accomplish the increase, characterization, evaluation, maintenance, and distribution of subtropical/tropical woody and herbaceous ornamental germplasm and associated information.
Recommends and/or develops alternative methods/techniques to accomplish objectives especially with the novel crops where standard procedures do not apply.
Utilizes phenotypic, genetic, genomic, and molecular techniques to genetically characterize subtropical/tropical ornamental germplasm to properly classify and understand taxonomic relationships among related species.
Applies phenotypic, genetic, and genomic techniques to evaluate woody and herbaceous germplasm for adaptation, ornamental merit, and to select superior variants that could accelerate genetic improvement of ornamental germplasm. Travel Required

Qualifying experience for GS-14 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-13 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting research on plant genetics; managing a plant genetics research project; presenting or publishing research related to plant genetics.
