Responsibilities
Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Public Affairs, Media Relations Division in Miami, Florida.

This position starts at a salary of $81,723.00 (GS-12, Step 1) to $106,245.00 (GS-12, Step 10) with promotion potential to $126,336 (GS-13 Step 10).

Listed are some of the duties required for this position:
Manages news media coverage of Agency programs and operations including developing relationships with media, pitching stories and providing information on agency policies and procedures;
Keeps abreast of current events and potential news items related to the Agency including providing guidance, assistance and consultation to field leadership relating to responding to specific requests from media, the public, specialized groups and community and governmental entities;
Develops and disseminates material that effectively informs the public of the Agency's policies programs services and activities;
Creates communication materials such as Public Affairs Guidance, Communication Plans, Media Event Plans, media advisories, news releases, blog and micro-blog posts and agency statements; and
Manages social media engagement; creates social media content and measures performance.

Qualifications Experience: You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
Creating and writing informational materials designed to reach external audiences through various channels including both traditional media (print/radio broadcast/television broadcast) and social media;
Writing communication plans that establish key messages and coordinating the release of information to news media and other stakeholders;
Providing information concerning recent news events and news items to news media sources; and
Communicating an agency's policy to outside groups and officials. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
